Sir Jim Ratcliffe has named Gareth Southgate as the first option on the list to replace Erik ten Hag at the helm of the Manchester United bench in the summer. Southgate's contract with the England national football team expires in December, and the FA are doing their best to convince Gareth to renew his contract.
However, Southgate has made it clear that he will not decide anything on his future until after this year's European Championship in Germany. According to English media, Ratcliffe, along with other members of the United board, have recently consulted with some of the club's legends about the right person to replace Erik ten Hag. The predominant response was Southgate's name.
The current England manager also has the support of some of United's players, as well as the new sporting director expected to join the club, Dan Ashworth. The latter has a positive relationship with Southgate due to the fact that they have worked together for a long time in the English Football Association.
In the event that Gareth is convinced to accept the role of coach at Manchester United, the "Red Devils" should also consider terminating the contract with Erik ten Hag. In case the Dutchman is sacked by the club, he could benefit from around 10 million pounds for the premature termination of the contract, a considerable amount.
However, it seems that Ratcliffe is not convinced of Ten Hag's abilities, and his potential to entrust the club's revival to a long-term project. This means that if the governing board is convinced of Southgate's alternative, and the Englishman also accepts the club's proposal, in all likelihood the new season will start with a new coach at Old Trafford.
