The Coppa Italia is an annual cup competition in Italian football. In terms of importance, it is the second most important competition in Italy, certainly after Serie A.

The championship works  as a tournament with a knockout format. The draw for the entire competition is made at the beginning of the competition. Each match is played with one match, except for the semi-finals which are played with a round robin system. If a Coppa Italia non-semi-final match ends in a draw, extra time of 30 minutes is played and then, if necessary, penalties.

The winning team earns the right to play in the Europa League. However if they have qualified for the Champions League from the Serie A ranking, their place goes to the next team in the ranking that has not qualified for the European competitions.

As for the winners, 16 different teams were lucky enough to lift the trophy. The most successful are undoubtedly the Juventus team who have managed to win it a total of 13 times. They are followed by Roma with 9, Inter with 7, Lazio with 7, etc.

In the 2019/20 season, the winning team was Napoli, who managed to beat Juventus in the final  after the penalty shootout, with regular time ending goalless. This was the sixth Coppa Italia trophy for the Neapolitans.

The player with the most appearances in the Coppa Italia is the current coach of the Italian national team, Roberto Mancini. He made 72 appearances in this competition between 1981 and 2001.

In terms of scored goals, the record is held by Alessandro Altobelli with 56 goals.
