UEFA Champions League
The UEFA Champions League is an annual competition organized by UEFA. This competition is seen as the most important for clubs in Europe as it pits the continent's biggest teams against each other. In the current format, 32 teams participate, initially divided into 8 groups and then with a knock-out system.
In the group stage with 4 teams, each team plays 2 times with each opponent in its group. At the end of this stage, the top 2 teams in each of the groups qualify for further. In the following, the competition has a knock-out format and 2 matches are played in each match. The final is played in just one match and winning it is seen as the biggest goal that any club in Europe can achieve.
The most successful team in the history of the UEFA Champions League is Real Madrid with 13 trophies of this competition. After them come the other giants of the continent: Milan with 7 trophies, Bayern Munich with 6, Liverpool with 6, Barcelona with 5, etc.
The reigning champions are the Bavarians of Bayern Munich led by Hans Flick who won every competition in which they participated last season. The Bavarians defeated Paris Saint Germain in the final and won the Champions League trophy for the 6th time in their history.
The best scorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League is Cristiano Ronaldo with 134 goals, followed by Messi with 118. Meanwhile, in terms of appearances, Iker Casillas leads with 177 games. However, it is expected that his record will be broken by Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently stands at 174 games.
