Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has said Trent Alexander-Arnold could be one of the best defenders of all time if he works to improve his defensive skills. The 23-year-old has been the center of criticism recently, for his mistakes in defense, which have also affected Liverpool's shaky progress in the championship and Champions League. But Neville, although a staunch United fan, has expressed his admiration for Trent.
Gary told Sky Sports:
"No defender I've seen in this country can do what he (Trent) does. So if he works on some fundamental things defensively, and gains some consistency, then we won't just have one of the best attacking right-backs this country has produced, but maybe the right-back best in the world. We are dealing with a defender of Cafu's level, it is something really special."
Neville stated that there is an imbalance in Trent's game, as according to him, the offensive element in the player overshadows his defensive game. However, the former United man was clear, once again pointing out his criticism of Liverpool's talent:
"I think Trent needs to work on his defensive skills. I said a few years ago that his defensive game lacks seriousness and sharpness. At some point in his career, it's going to set him back."
In this situation, there is a real risk that the Liverpool defender will not be included in the English national team for the World Cup. But Neville thinks this could turn out to be a good opportunity for Trent to prove his critics wrong, and improve even further.
