Bayern Munich has surprisingly sacked coach Julian Nagelsmann and appointed German Thomas Tuchel as his replacement. The latter will sign a contract until 2025 with the Bavarians. The decision was met with quite a bit of surprise by the sports opinion, considering the unusual moment to take such a step.
However, the executive director of Bayern Munich, Oliver Kahn, has commented on the reasons that led to the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann. Kahn said:
"When we signed Julian Nagelsmann in the summer of 2021 we were convinced that we would work with him on a long-term plan, and that was everyone's goal until the end. But now we have come to the conclusion that the quality of our team, despite the Bundesliga title last season, has declined. After the World Cup, we played less successfully and less attractively. The big changes in performance have cast doubt on our goals for this season and for the future. This is why we decided to act now…”
Kahn also added:
"Personally and on behalf of Bayern I want to thank Julian and his team, and wish them all the best of luck in the future."
Last Sunday, Bayern was defeated in the championship by Bayer Leverkusen. This result means that the Bavarians have won only 5 of their last 10 matches in the Bundesliga. The next match for the team will be against Dortmund, Thomas Tuchel's former team. The latter won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, but despite this, he was sacked by the London club at the start of this season.
Tuchel knows the German championship well, but also has enough European experience to lead Bayern back to Champions League triumph.
