Christophe Galtier has been appointed the new coach of Paris St-Germain, after the French club announced the departure of Mauricio Pochettino. Galtier has signed a 2-year contract with the Parisians, until 2024. The French technician was at the head of Nice's bench until last month. The results were quite positive as the club secured fifth place in Ligue 1 as well as a place in the French Cup final.
Galtier is the seventh coach of Paris St-Germain since the club was taken over by the Qatari owners. After making the news official, Galtier expressed himself quite satisfied with the new task. He stated to the media:
"I am very happy to join Paris St-Germain, I would like to thank the president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Luis Campos and the club for the trust they had in me. I am fully aware of the responsibilities involved in the task of managing this extraordinary team, which is one of the most competitive and spectacular in Europe."
Galtier was in charge of Lille during the 2020-2021 season where the team surprised by winning the French championship. Together with Leonardo Jardim, he is the only coach who has managed to "steal" the championship title from PSG during the last decade.
Mauricio Pochettino Meanwhile, he left after just 18 months under the leadership of the French champions. The Argentinian gave the Parisians the championship title last season, but it wasn't enough for Al-Khelaifi. The elimination by Real Madrid in the 1/16 stage in the Champions League was seen as a major failure, especially after the approach of Leo Messi to the team.
Pochettino's task was to create balance in a team full of stars. But the pressure to win the Champions League and the difficult relationship with the fans made it impossible for the Argentinian technician to fulfill this objective.
