Manchester City has confirmed the approach of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United for the figure of 45 million pounds. The English midfielder has signed a 6-year contract with the reigning champions of England. This was the third approach in this market for Pep Guardiola's team, after Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega Moreno.
Phillips was very enthusiastic about the new adventure that awaits him at the Etihad:
"I am very pleased to have joined Manchester City, which has proven once again that it is the best team in England. City have a fantastic team and a coach like Pep Guardiola, who is rightly considered the best in the world. Being able to play under Pep and his staff is something I'm really excited about."
Phillips made his debut with the English national team in 2020. During the European Championship postponed to 2021, he played all possible matches and was declared the player of the year in the "3 Lions" national team. During the 2019-2020 season, Phillips played 37 games under coach Marcelo Bielsa. The midfielder was one of the key figures who contributed to Leeds United's promotion to the Premier League.
Manchester City's sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, also gave his commentary on Kalvin Phillips' approach to the Etihad:
"His reading of the game, along with his passing skills, energy and desire, make him a tremendous talent. He is a player with a fantastic desire to win. We believe Phillips will be a fantastic addition to our team and will complete the game perfectly."
The player made sure to thank the Leeds United fans, manager and club on the eve of his departure. According to Phillips, the decision to leave for Manchester City is important on the way to follow his dreams.
