The former Chelsea striker, Pat Nevin, has said that Raheem Sterling is not even considered by coach Southgate, to be part of the English representative in the World Cup. Sterling has not scored for the London Blues since August, and was replaced after an hour by coach Potter in the challenge against Brighton which Chelsea surprisingly lost 4-1. Coach Potter has "defended" Sterling's shadowy performances of late, but Nevin has a different take on the striker's form. The former Chelsea player said:
"I've been watching Raheem Sterling these days, and I can say that Graham Potter has got the best out of every player since he came to the club, with one exception (Sterling). If he continues to play the way he is playing now, he will not even be considered for a place in the World Cup."
Coach Southgate has until November 13 to submit his final list of players selected for the World Cup in Qatar. Meanwhile, Sterling has scored 19 times in 79 appearances with the "3 Lions" national team. The striker scored 3 times in the European 2020, and was part of the best team of the competition. However, it seems that since his move from Manchester City to Chelsea, Sterling has struggled to adapt and find his best form. This is confirmed by the statistics of the match with Brighton, where the player touched the ball only 35 times and handed it to the opponent 18 times.
Coach Potter, meanwhile, had this to say about Sterling:
"He has the flexibility, ability and quality to play in several positions. You should always try to find the right balance and solutions. As a team, we can do better. If we play better as a team, individuals will benefit as well…”
