The coach of Newcastle, Eddie Howe, has stated that for Sandro Tonali, the most difficult challenges will be those that will come in the following days. Howe referred to an investigation that has been opened against the player, for allegations of placing bets illegally. Despite this investigation, and the difficult situation, Tonali was part of the squad in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.
However, the Italian could be punished for a long time outside the green pitches, and manager Howe has in some way anticipated this possibility:
"I think the hardest part is what's to come, no matter what happens. The situation immediately got a lot of attention and people started talking about it. He (Tonali) got the support of the fans today, but that is difficult to maintain for a long time. Who knows what might happen later…?”
The Newcastle United manager added:
"I think it's good for him to know that he has the support of not only the senior management of the club and the coach, but also the support of the fans, and they are the most important people."
Tonali has also received the support of his teammates in this difficult moment. Jacob Murphy commented on the situation:
"...This shows that our club is a big family. We've been rooting for him (Tonali) all week, and the fans have shown him a lot of love as well."
Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon has praised Tonali for his performance on the pitch, even in this difficult moment. The investigation against the Italian is expected to continue and the final decision is not yet known when it can be announced. However, Newcastle and manager Howe must prepare for the worst-case scenario, considering the need for a temporary replacement for Tonali.
