After the last negotiations with the club leaders, the English media have reported that Kaoru Mitoma has agreed to sign a new contract with Brighton. It is a long-term contract for the next 5 years, which is very positive news for Brighton, who look set to keep one of the best players in their arsenal for a few more seasons.
The Japanese joined the club in the summer of 2021, when he was transferred from Kawasaki Frontale, a Japanese team that plays in the J-league. Mitoma spent a short loan spell with Union SG in Belgium, before returning to Brighton. In his first season in the Premier League, the player scored 10 goals in 41 appearances, as well as 5 assists.
According to the information so far, Mitoma is expected to secure a salary of 80 thousand pounds per week based on the new contract. All details are being finalized and the deal is expected to close within this week. The process is being followed by the player's agent, Keisuke Sekine. According to sources close to him, the agent has confirmed that Mitoma is totally committed to coach De Zerbi's project for the club.
Last season, the player himself expressed his happiness not only for the club where he plays, but also for the city:
"The city has a good climate, the sea is close, so it is a good place to live. Our fans support us loudly both at home and away. I feel a real warmth, they are really incredible fans. The backstage staff are also pretty good people, I feel very happy here.”
Mitoma has thus rejected the interest of legendary English clubs such as Liveprool, United, or Manchester City, to stay at Brighton.
