The president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, has once again spoken about the departure of Leo Messi from the club in the summer. This time, however, the Spaniard's statement has been somewhat bizarre, provoking reactions from public opinion.
Laporta said that he hoped that Messi would stay at Barcelona, and play for free, ie without financial benefits. The 34-year-old joined Paris St-Germain during the summer transfer window, as Barcelona could not meet the financial conditions set by La Liga. The Argentine, who won 10 championships in Spain with the Catalans, had to leave despite accepting a half salary, from what his initial contract provided for.
Meanwhile Laporata said:
"It was a great disappointment on both sides. I hoped Messi would make a big turnaround, and agree to play for free for the club. I would like it and support it. As I understood, and La Liga would accept this. "But we could not ask a player like Messi to do that."
The president of Barcelona reiterated once again that renewal with Messi was almost impossible. Even if it became a reality, it would put the club at great financial risk. Laporta also commented on his tense relationship with coach Ronald Koeman. It seems that the parties have reached an agreement, at least provisionally, regarding the Dutchman's contract.
Laporta declared:
"I asked him (Koeman) if he still had faith in the team and he said, 'Of course I do. "I have to bring the injured players back into the game. 'Koeman will continue at all costs to show that Barcelona are currently a competitive team."
From Laporta's recent comments, it is understood that Koeman can be trusted to the team, and for the second half of the season.
