England went no further than the draw against the USA, thus missing the chance to seal their place in Group B. The match went much differently than expected, as for a large part of the game it was actually the USA who dominated the challenge, looking for the winning goal.
On the other hand, the "3 Lions" never created anything special, as the performance was nowhere near that against Iran in the opening match. Mason Mount forced USA goalkeeper Matt Turner into a spectacular save in the first half, but that was pretty much the only clean sheet England had in the first 45 minutes. England also looked lukewarm in the second, with Harry Kane's header the only chance of danger.
The USA, on the other hand, had much cleaner chances, as Weston McKennie missed a good chance to put his side ahead, while Christian Pulisic hit the crossbar in the first half. This is a very satisfying result for the Americans, who are still in contention to qualify, and everything will depend on the challenge with Iran. England on the other hand are also very close to qualifying, as they only need to avoid a defeat by more than 4 goals against Wales.
At the end of the challenge with the USA, the coach of England, Gareth Southgate, appeared happy with the mentality of his team, regardless of the result. The technician told the media:
"The players are a bit discouraged, but I'm not, I'm not unhappy. This is a game you can lose if you don't have the right mindset. Coming from such an easy win (against Iran) it's hard to find that level of play again... I'm not frustrated. We had to show another side of us today and I'm happy with the mentality of the team."
