Real Madrid are keen to sign a new centre-back this summer as they face an injury crisis in their defence, and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite has been linked with a move. Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti handed Branthwaite his Premier League debut during his time in charge at Everton. With Eder Militao out injured until the summer and Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba's contracts expiring in 2026, Real Madrid are prioritising signing a new centre-back, as well as a full-back.
Sources close to the Spanish media say that Real Madrid executives have discussed Branthwaite, but so far there has been no concrete contact with the player or Everton about a transfer. Ancelotti is well aware of the quality of the English player, but he is not the only force behind the transfer action, and any young player could surpass him in the future.
Another important aspect is that Everton have not changed their stance on selling Branthwaite, even after interest from Manchester United last year. Everton value the player at over £70m, and he has a contract until 2027 with an option for a further year, giving the club a strong negotiating position. The club are unwilling to accept a low-priced sale and are looking to build their future team around him, while also considering a new and lucrative contract.
Also, with eight players out of contract in the summer, Everton are expected to free up some space on their wage bill and improve their financial situation. Revenue from the new stadium at Bramley Moore-Dock, from ticket sales and naming rights, will help in this regard. If Everton were to be relegated this season, the scenario would be different, but the club appear to have found their best form again in recent weeks.
