Zidane Real Madrid, between the past and the future

Real Madrid has started the 2019/2020 season amid an atmosphere of uncertainty and pressure. The controversy between Zidane and Bale, the many injuries and above all the team game which has not been completely convincing in these first months of the season, especially in the Champions League.

However in La Liga the situation is more positive where Real Madrid is at the top of the standings 2 points ahead of Barcelona rivals. In these conditions, among the fans of the club there is a mixture of emotions where some have doubts about the potential of this team to win trophies this season while others are positive about the work done by Zidane since his return.

The return of Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid coach was as startling as his departure at the end of the 2017/2018 season. During the 2.5 year period at the helm of the club Zidane managed to win 3 Champions League, 1 La Liga, and many other secondary trophies.

Undoubtedly the victory of 3 European competitions in a row made this period one of the most successful in the history of the club, where we can single out the 2016/2017 season where Real Madrid won La Liga and Champions League within the same season.

The situation he found on his return was different. The club was out of contention for the title and eliminated from the Champions League and Copa Del Rey. His new task would be even more difficult than the first time, with a team without Cristiano Ronaldo and that looked like he would make enough changes during the summer transfer window to return competitive.

It has been 7 months since that moment, the summer market has been closed for a long time and the changes did not turn out to be as radical as thought. Practically only one purchase for the main line-up that was Eden Hazard, while the rest of the approaches were some young players for whom expectations are high. This has been one of the main reasons for the pessimism of the fans or the media near the club who have seen this purchase campaign as insufficient even though more than 300 million euros were spent.

But how does this team compare to that of the 16/17 season, winner of La Liga and the Champions League?

And also, the aforementioned recruitment campaign has been described by many as insufficient to triumph this season, but is this setting also valid for the future?

2016/2017 and 2019/2020 seasons, comparison of team composition.

As can be seen from the images above, 15 players of the current team have been part of the team in the 16/17 season and some of them have reached the age of 30 or are heading to the last stage of their career so it can be said that the form of their has been more positive in the 16/17 season. But this is not the only argument that goes in favor of that team.

Presence of Cristiano Ronaldo at the highest point in his career has been one of the key success factors the club had in that period. His consistent performances and ability to set important confrontations can not be found in any of the current team players, at least not at the same level. We are also dealing with a team with a mentality and game mode defined and executed correctly almost every match, while the current team is still looking for a game identity and trying to restore the fiu mentality.

Despite the above factors, Real Madrid this season is a team with a lot of quality in its composition. The defense department has changes only to the substitute names while the midfield is practically the same as the 16/17 season. Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, James, Isco are part of the team in both seasons and the only difference is Valverde, who has shown with his appearances that Zidane's belief is justified.

As for the attack ward there are some new names like Hazard, Vinicius, Jovic, Rodrigo joining Bale and Benzema. Probably the only reason why this attacking lineup is underestimated is the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who along with Messi would be irreplaceable for any team.

Above we talked about how the age of many footballers is over 30, but we should not forget another fact, the group of young footballers, not only those who are currently in the team, but also the footballers on loan at other clubs European.

The future

We are in October and for several days the footballers have been gathering with their national teams. At Real Madrid there are 9 footballers under the age of 24 who are currently part of the respective national teams:

Reguilon, Militao, Rodrygo, Kubo, Valverde, Odegaard, Lunin, Ceballos, Hakimi and if to this list are added the names of Vinicius, Asensio and Jovic who are usually part of their national team, we are dealing with 12 footballers. Apart from Reguilo and Hakimi, the rest are footballers approached by other clubs at a very young age and the level they have reached is a positive argument for the quality of the club's recruitment staff.

But how do these new elements affect the quality of the team? Currently what is expected of them is to show quality when given minutes on the field and help the team achieve the objectives, but it would be absurd to leave the task of leading the club to success to them. However in the future many of them may manage to confirm themselves and why not, become some of the best footballers on the planet.

Past, present or future?

The current team has a lot of questions about itself. The past success is there, undeniable, and nothing can change it.

Will this season be a success or a failure, it will depend on how the team and Zidane will manage to solve the problems in the game and mentality.

While the future, at least on paper, seems full of players with the potential to bring other important trophies to the club.
