Real Madrid are ready to make a £100m bid to lure Manchester City star Rodri to the Bernabeu this summer. New Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has made the Spanish midfielder a priority following a humiliating defeat to PSG in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
Rodri, 29, spent a long spell on the sidelines with a serious ligament and meniscus tear, making just one start and three substitute appearances at the Club World Cup. He was injured again after 37 minutes on the pitch as City were eliminated by Al Hilal.
While City manager Pep Guardiola will be adamant about losing the key midfielder, Madrid believe a big bid could lure the team away from the Etihad. Rodri's contract with City expires in 2027, giving Madrid the opportunity to assess his fitness over the next 12 months.
Alonso is urging the Real Madrid boss to act now to tempt City with a bid for Rodri, with City likely to be keen on a long-term deal if he remains fit. Real Madrid believe Rodri, who was a star at Atletico and moved to the Premier League for £62.8m, could be open to a return home.
After a heavy defeat to PSG, Alonso is looking to strengthen his midfield options, with Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, seen as the perfect fit. Guardiola has always praised Rodri, calling him one of the best players in the world and stressing that his absence is greatly felt in the team.
