Manchester City are set to join Real Madrid in a race to sign AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez. The Frenchman is one of the Rossoneri's most important players, but his contract expires in the summer of 2026 and talks over a new deal have stalled. This has attracted the attention of several rival clubs in Europe, who are also eyeing a move for Hernandez.
Real Madrid are one of them, as the Spanish giants are looking for reinforcements in defence, especially on the left wing. However, Manchester City also seem set to make a move for the Milan defender, should the Citizens fail to land their primary target for the defence. That is Juventus' Andrea Cambiaso, who was on City's radar as a January transfer target. Pep Guardiola still wants Cambiaso to move to the Etihad, but should that not happen, Hernandez is more than suitable for the role, in the eyes of the Spanish coach.
Pep Guardiola has also shown interest in Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies, but the latter just signed a contract extension with the Bavarians until 2030.
Meanwhile, as for Hernandez, Real Madrid are still considered the frontrunners in the race for his services. The Frenchman is also said to be keen on a return to Madrid, where he spent two seasons as a player, between 2 and 2017. The defender is still in talks with Milan over a contract extension, but at this point, it is unlikely to materialise. Hernandez considers the salary in Milan's new proposal too low. At the same time, the environment around him in recent months has not been ideal and Theo is ready for a new chapter in his career.
