Newcastle are considering a move for Greek talent Konstantinos Karetsas. The 17-year-old Genk striker has made a memorable debut on the world stage, becoming Greece's youngest ever starter and goalscorer against Scotland last month. His achievements for club and country have attracted the attention of Europe's top clubs, and Newcastle scouts, known as the Toons, have followed him to Hampden in person.
Now, Newcastle are preparing to enter a battle with Bayern Munich to sign the talent. The winger, who is comfortable on either flank or as a No. 10, has a £35m release clause in his contract with the Belgian club. Karetsas, born in Belgium to Greek parents, fits the bill perfectly, while Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has a successful track record of developing young talent. While his squad already includes established left-footers such as Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes, the multi-dimensional player is equally effective on the right, providing competition for Jacob Murphy, 30, in that position, a key priority for Howe.
After three transfer windows without big-money signings and struggling with financial woes at PSG, Newcastle already have plenty of money to spend this summer. The transfer funds provided by their Saudi owners could be further increased if the Carabao Cup winners manage to finish in the top five and secure Champions League qualification. Karetsas, who grew up idolising Brazilians Neymar and Ronaldinho, has signed a new contract until 2027, but his release clause makes him an attractive and affordable option.
Bayern are reportedly big admirers of the player and have already decided to make their move, which could turn into a transfer battle with Napoli also getting involved from Italy. Reports from Italy and Greece claim that Liverpool and Manchester United have also been impressed by his performances, while Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa sent scouts to Greece's 3-0 Nations League win at Hampden Park. It remains to be seen what the talented player's final destination will be.
