Wolves striker Matheus Cunha has expressed his intention to move to a bigger club this summer. Cunha has scored 13 goals in 26 Premier League games this season, attracting interest from several top clubs. The Brazilian has not signed a new contract, despite signing a new four-year deal last month, but many believe this was to protect his transfer value, which includes a £4m release clause. Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest all expressed interest in January, but he has opted to stay at the club and help Wanderers fight off relegation.
And speaking to The Guardian, Cunha stated that he now wants to seek a new challenge:
"There are things you can't control, but I couldn't leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone. Now, we are close to achieving our objective. But I have made it clear that I have to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential."
Cunha's comments follow what could be a significant development from one of his potential contenders.
Arsenal confirmed the appointment of Andrei Berta as their new sporting director on Sunday. Berta became the leading candidate to replace Edu after the latter resigned to take up a position in the club's management team under Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis. He has started his new role with immediate effect.
Berta was responsible for bringing Cunha from Hertha Berlin to Atletico Madrid in 2021, with the Spanish side paying around £22m. And fans believe he could be looking to reunite with the 25-year-old forward at his new club. Berta left Atletico Madrid in January after a 12-year spell and was credited with signing Rodri, Antoine Griezmann and Jan Oblak on lucrative deals, as well as selling players for a significant profit for the Spanish club.
