After the news published a few days ago, it is now official: Everton has been punished by the Premier League with the removal of 10 points, due to breaking the financial rules of the English championship. Everton are already in 19th place in the overall standings, and this means that the club is in danger of relegation.
The penalty is the heaviest in Premier League history, and Everton officials expressed shock and disappointment. Everton also said they would appeal the decision. But what is the reason for the punishment? According to the regulations, Premier League clubs can declare losses of up to 105 million pounds over 3 years. After the investigations carried out, it was noted that Everton's losses for the 2021-2022 season were estimated at 124.5 million pounds. The club said in an official statement:
"...The severity and degree of punishment sanctioned by the commission is neither fair nor does it reflect the evidence submitted. The club will also monitor with great interest the decisions that will be made on other cases involving breaches of Premier League rules."
Meanwhile, the Premier League commission has justified the extent of the punishment based on several reasons. Among them were the club's excessive spending, the inability to sell players, as well as finishing the championship in a lower position than expected.
After the published news about Everton, the attention is already on Manchester City. "Citizens" committed about 100 violations from 2009 to 2018, according to the conclusions of an independent investigation. If Manchester City are found guilty of these offences, the punishment is expected to be even more severe, considering Everton's punishment.
