The coach of Sporting Lisbon, Ruben Amorim, has agreed in advance to be the next coach of Manchester United, after the news of the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. The English club is in talks with Sporting to agree on the financial aspect of the deal, but sources close to United have indicated that the English have no problem paying the clause for breaking Amorim's contract.
The Sporting technician was recently rumored for a possible transfer to Manchester City, and was seen by the "citizens" as the ideal successor to coach Pep Guardiola, in case the latter leaves the Etihad. In addition, City has appointed Hugo Viana, former sporting director of Sporting, as the club's new sporting director. The latter has a pretty good relationship with Amorim, as the pair have worked together. However, it seems that United have managed to convince the Portuguese coach to come to the head of the bench at Old Trafford.
Amorim was in talks with West Ham United earlier this year, but the club decided to appoint former Wolves and Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui. Amorim has been in charge of Sporting since 2020 and helped the club end their 19-year title-less run in 2021. Amorim was also part of an internship under Jose Mourinho during the time when Jose he was also the coach of the team at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese is expected to cost United 10 million euros, a sum which is considered an acceptable fee by the club's management. This is because the other options in the market are also limited in terms of coaches who are at the right level to take the direction of the "Red Devils" in the long term.
