Manchester United are making a surprise move to sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the 28-year-old striker was left without a club after his contract with Everton expired this week. Manager Ruben Amorim is keen to secure his services as the club look to manage their finances and rebuild their attacking department. Sources within the club confirm that the player has been approached about a potential move from Merseyside to Manchester.
United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m and have made a similar offer for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. However, to make room for other arrivals, Amorim is considering the departure of several current strikers such as Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony. If finances can be balanced, Calvert-Lewin could serve as a valuable alternative, either as a starter or as a strategic reserve in attack.
Calvert-Lewin was once one of the most sought-after strikers, scoring over ten goals in two consecutive seasons for Everton from 2019 to 2021, before injuries affected his form. United see him as a player with qualities that are currently missing from the team and his role as a third or fourth choice could be in line with his ambitions. The club are willing to offer him a lucrative contract with performance-based bonuses, making the deal attractive for both parties.
Meanwhile, Amorim have made two bids for Mbeumo, but Brentford are not giving up their £65m demand for the player. In other developments, Juventus are interested in including midfielder Douglas Luiz in a swap deal for Jadon Sancho, who is no longer part of the club's plans. Manchester United have also confirmed that Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia want to leave Old Trafford.
