Manchester United will not engage in a financial battle for Gianluigi Donnarumma. That leaves Chelsea and Manchester City open to trying to lure the Italian goalkeeper. Euro 2020 winner Gianluigi Donnarumma has one year left on his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and is demanding a significant increase in his £210,000-a-week wages.
However, Manchester United do not want to be forced to pay a high price, putting themselves out of the running with the Citizens and Chelsea for his signature. City could lose first-choice goalkeeper Ederson and are unwilling to make James Trafford his permanent replacement, as the latter commanded a record fee for a British goalkeeper.
This situation leaves Manchester United hoping that Andre Onana will be the first-choice goalkeeper for the start of the season, unless he recovers in time from his thigh injury. If Onana does not recover, the manager may be forced to trust in Altay Bayindir or Tom Heaton.
United also made a bid to sign Emi Martinez on loan from Aston Villa, but that has fallen through and the club have now dropped their interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma. Onana looks set to start the new season against Arsenal on August 17. Many Manchester United fans have been critical of Onana after a season full of mistakes. However, it seems the former Inter goalkeeper will once again be a regular at Old Trafford.
