David de Gea's future at Manchester United is in doubt. The Spanish goalkeeper is close to signing a new contract, but inexcusable mistakes in recent games with the "Red Devils" have caused his status at Old Trafford to falter.
The media in England report that De Gea will not be assured of a starting role next season, even if he signs a new contract. Coach Erik ten Hag seems to have somewhat lost faith in the Spaniard in recent weeks. De Gea gifted West Ham the championship win after a mistimed save from Said Benrahma's shot. The challenge ended with the score 1-0. Also in the Europa League game against Sevilla, De Gea misplaced a pass towards Maguire, which was intercepted by the Spaniards and United were penalised, eventually being eliminated from the competition.
Despite the goalkeeper's mistakes, United are still in talks with De Gea over a contract renewal, and in all likelihood the Spaniard will have to accept a pay cut to reach a deal. De Gea currently earns around 375 pounds per week, a fairly high figure, even for a goalkeeper of his caliber.
Club leaders are demanding that De Gea sign a new contract, with a lower salary and performance-based bonuses. This is also the reason why United's board has not decided to activate the clause for renewal for an extra year, which is provided in the existing contract of the giant of the gate.
The club are also looking for new options in goal, and one of them is Brentford goalkeeper David Raya. Another option is Diogo Costa of Porto, but there are still no concrete attempts by Manchester to make official offers for these names.
