Atletico Madrid are interested in a summer move for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero; Romero will enter the final two years of his contract on July 1; the LaLiga side have been following his development and consider him one of the "great" central defenders in the world.
The Argentina international and World Cup winner will enter the final two years of his contract on July 1. Romero, who forms Spurs' first-choice centre-back partnership with Micky van der Ven, has missed 27 games this season through injury. However, Atletico have been closely monitoring his progress and see him as a defender who could become one of the best in the world. Their interest has not been affected by sporting director Andrea Berta's surprise move to Arsenal.
Romero was signed by Atalanta in 2022 in a deal valued at £43m and has since made over 100 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring seven goals.
His contract expires in 2027 and Tottenham will be tempted to sell the player or offer him a new contract. Atletico are very interested in signing him and could offer UEFA Champions League football.
Romero has previously criticised the club for selling their best players and not investing the proceeds properly. The Argentina international said "it's always the same people who are responsible" for the absences in the Spurs squad, with key players such as his centre-back partner Van de Ven and key summer signing Dominic Solanke missing for long periods this season.
