The former defender of Real Madrid, Manchester United and the French national team, Raphael Varane, has announced his retirement from football. Varane joined Serie A side Como this summer, but the Frenchman picked up an injury in his first game for the club against Sampdoria. The defender has announced that despite retiring from football, he will continue to be part of Como, but in a different role, outside the green field. In an official statement, Varane said:
"I hold myself to the highest standard. I want to quit at my best, not when I'm struggling. It takes a lot of courage to listen to your heart and instincts. I've fallen and got up a thousand times but this is the moment to stop and hang up my boots, with my final game where I lifted a trophy at Wembley."
Varane added:
"I have no regrets. I wouldn't change a thing. I have earned more than I ever dreamed of. But beyond the trophies and accolades, I'm proud of the fact that I stayed true to my principles of being honest, and gave everything better than I found it. I hope I have made you all proud.”
Meanwhile, on his future, the French defender said:
"A new life begins outside the field. I will continue to be part of Como. Only without the shoes and foot guards. This is something I will share with you more about in the future.”
Varane is one of the most decorated defenders in football history. The Frenchman won 3 times La Liga and 4 times UEFA Champions League during his adventure at Real Madrid. He won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with Manchester United, as well as the World Cup with the French national team.
