Jamal Musiala scored again as Germany continued their winning start to Euro 2024 with a win over Hungary, becoming the first team to progress to the knockout stages. The Bayern Munich forward impressed throughout the match and scored midway through the first half, sending a powerful shot inches wide of the post, before being given a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the second half.
Hungary were disappointed with their first goal, claiming a foul from Ilkay Gundogan on defender Willi Orban before the Barcelona midfielder passed to Musiala to slot into the top of the net. A video assistant referee (VAR) review confirmed the decision on the pitch, as Musiala celebrated with his team-mates in front of the Hungarian fans behind the goal. Hungary thought they had equalized late in the first half, but Roland Sallai's header was disallowed for clear offside.
Germany doubled their advantage in the second half when ex-Manchester City man Gundogan was unmarked and easily slotted past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. After their dominant 5-1 win over Scotland, Germany were made to work harder for victory with Hungary threatening at times and defending tenaciously. Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai showed his quality in set-pieces, firing a superb shot towards goal that required a save from Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Szoboszlai went close again in a good period for Hungary in the first half, but was denied by a brilliant block from Jonathan Tah. Germany's performance was encouraging as the Germans showed moments of creativity and control, doing enough to secure six points from their first two matches at Euro 2024
