Switzerland is one of the most interesting representatives of the European, which is expected to take place in the summer months. The team led by Vladimir Petkovic, is expected to make public soon, the final list of 26 players who will take part in the prestigious competition. But what do we know at the moment about the Swiss representative?
The national team is led by the 57-year-old Vladimir Petkovic since 2014. Petkovic previously coached Young Boys and Lazio, where with the latter he managed to win the Coppa Italia in 2013. This is the only major trophy that the coach of Bosnian origin has won. However, the results of his work with Switzerland have been generally positive.
The representative superstar is definitely Granit Xhaka. The Arsenal player holds the role of captain in the team, being one of the most experienced players in the national team. But Switzerland does not lack stars. Liverpool's Xherdan Shaqiri and Atalanta's Remo Freuler are just 2 of the team's strengths. Other names expected to weigh heavily in Euro 2020 matches are Breel Embolo, Yann Sommer, and Dortmund player Manuel Akanji.
The Swiss national team has participated in the finals of only 4 Europeans. The first appearance was that of 1996 where the team failed to pass the group. In the other two appearances, respectively in 2004 and 2008, the fate of Switzerland was the same, being eliminated in the group stage.
But the 2016 European in Portugal reserved a different scenario for the team. The Swiss managed to go to the 1/16 round, where they were then eliminated on penalties by Poland. Given the growing performances, Petkovic is not expected to bring new players to the squad this European. With a talented team but also experienced players, Switzerland can advance beyond expectations in Euro 2020.
