Chelsea have opened talks with Villarreal over the sale of Portuguese defender Renato Veiga for around €30m. The 22-year-old has agreed personal terms with Villarreal, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano.
Renato Veiga joined Chelsea last summer but was loaned to Juventus in January. Now a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge appears to be imminent, with negotiations continuing with Villarreal. Romano said:
"Villarreal have agreed personal terms with Renato Veiga! Talks are well underway with Chelsea. Current proposal: 24 million euros plus bonuses, trying to reach a package of 30 million."
Some Chelsea fans may be concerned about Renato Veiga leaving so soon, as he looked like a good prospect when he arrived. He is capable of playing at centre-back, left-back or defensive midfield, and could have a significant role in Enzo Maresca's side over the course of the four-competition season.
However, it seems Chelsea would prefer to take advantage of Veiga's sale, perhaps because they feel they have other options to cover the position, or will invest the proceeds from his sale into new signings in that area. Levi Colwill's recent serious injury also suggests Chelsea would need reinforcements in defence, with Wesley Fofana having not been at his best due to ongoing health issues during his time in west London.
