Chelsea has formalized the approach of Romeo Lavia from Southampton, for the figure of 55 million pounds. The talented Belgian midfielder has signed for the next 7 years with the Londoners and expressed himself quite happy about the adventure that awaits him at Stamford Bridge. Lavia commented:
"I am very happy to join Chelsea and to be part of this promising project. Chelsea is a fantastic club with a great history, I'm thrilled to be a part of it. I'm looking forward to getting to know my new teammates and building a chemistry to achieve great things together."
Liverpool were also interested in Lavia's card, but the offer of "The Reds" of 46 million pounds was rejected by Southampton. Lavia is the second player to shun Liverpool to join Chelsea. Colombian Moises Caicedo also chose Chelsea as his next destination, despite Liverpool being close to agreeing a deal with Brighton for his move to Anfield.
The Belgian talent is a product of Anderlecht's academy. The player initially joined Manchester City in 2020 but failed to find a place in the first team. This was the reason for the departure to Southampton. Despite his contribution last season, "The Saints" could not avoid relegation. Due to a clause in the player's contract, City will receive 20% of the amount Chelsea will pay Southampton for Lavia. The latter took care to thank his old club and the fans for the support they have given him:
"I will never forget the trust that the club and the fans around the world put in me, and I hope I have rewarded your trust...this club will always remain in my heart. I wish you luck this season and I look forward to the club's march to the Premier League, where it belongs, as soon as possible."
