Harry Kane is set to stay at Bayern Munich for at least another year, dashing hopes of a return to the Premier League this summer. His Bayern contract is understood to contain a release clause that has been reduced to £54m from £67m for an English club in January. The clause had alarmed several clubs, including Manchester United, who thought Kane might be ready to return to the Premier League once he won his first title.
However, sources close to the 31-year-old forward say he is happy at Bayern and wants to prove himself in the Bundesliga title defence and the UEFA Champions League race before considering a move away. Kane is averaging almost a goal per game for Bayern, and knows his place in the England squad remains secure as long as he continues to perform at the highest level.
The shock was caused when Kane chose to leave the Premier League last season, despite interest from Manchester City, who then invested in Erling Haaland. Manchester United have shown continued interest in his services, while the idea of a sensational return to Arsenal in north London has been mentioned with reserve. However, his adventure with Bayern seems more likely, as he aims to win a trophy that has so far eluded him.
The decision could dent Harry Kane's chances of becoming the Premier League's all-time leading scorer, having scored 213 goals and was closing in on Alan Shearer's record of 260 before he left for Bayern. However, Kane's determination to prioritise major trophies over individual records is set to pay off this weekend. A win at RB Leipzig on Saturday would secure Vincent Kompany's side the Bundesliga title and give Kane the first trophy of his career.
