Arsenal are confident of making Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi their top summer signing, despite interest from Real Madrid and Liverpool. Reports in Spain suggested Madrid made a late move for the 26-year-old midfielder, while Liverpool have also been mentioned as one of the clubs interested in him. Arsenal are in advanced stages of talks to secure a deal for Zubimendi, who has a €60m release clause in his contract with Sociedad.
Manager Mikel Arteta is a big admirer of the player and new sporting director Andrea Berta believes Martin Zubimendi would strengthen a midfield that could be reshaped this summer. Arteta revealed last Friday that Arsenal are looking to extend Thomas Partey's contract, although it remains to be seen whether a deal will be reached. Partey's contract expires at the end of the season and one source suggests he may have to accept a pay cut to stay at the club.
Italian midfielder Jorginho is also out of contract this summer and is struggling to make a comeback this season after suffering a rib injury earlier this month. The 33-year-old has attracted interest from Brazilian clubs after his representatives met with Palmeiras and Flamengo during the January transfer window. Flamengo appear to be the favourites for his signature, although a move to Arsenal has not been ruled out entirely.
Despite these challenges, it is widely expected that Martin Zubimendi's arrival will be announced at the Emirates Stadium and his signing will be seen as a major coup, especially given Liverpool's intense efforts to bring him in last summer, which he preferred to stay at Sociedad. With this transfer, Arsenal will strengthen their midfield structure in depth, while securing an energetic and talented player to help them achieve their objectives next season.
