William Saliba is set to stay at Arsenal despite interest from Real Madrid, according to English media. Andy Brassell, a European football analyst, believes that three other central defenders offer more value for money than Madrid can offer at the moment, and Saliba is not on the Spanish club's main list for defensive reinforcements.
Los Blancos coach Xabi Alonso made rebuilding the club's defence a top priority in the summer transfer window. While Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen and Álvaro Carreras all moved to Spain, another centre-back remains on the club's wish list.
Media reports suggested Saliba was a priority target for Real Madrid. However, the 24-year-old ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract with Arsenal last month. Brassell said the news of Saliba's stay at Arsenal came as no surprise to Real Madrid's board, as the Bernabeu board has historically not altered the club's wage structure to bring in a particular player.
Saliba, after signing a new contract, stressed that the club is in a good position to move forward, a key factor in his decision to stay. Brassell also stressed that interest in Saliba was probably overstated by his agents in order to speed up negotiations with Arsenal.
Instead of Saliba, Real Madrid have identified Marc Guehi, Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano as their preferred options for their defence. All three of these defenders are in the final year of their contracts, making the situation favorable for Madrid. Considering Real Madrid's financial situation and coach Xabi's preferences, they would prefer to sign players like Guehi and Konate rather than engage in a fierce battle for Saliba.
