Manchester United look set to have a busy summer transfer window, with manager Ruben Amorim looking to strengthen his attacking options at Old Trafford. The club are reportedly moving forward with a £40m bid for Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray but still under contract at Napoli.
United have suffered from a lack of goals this season, and Amorim sees the 26-year-old Nigerian as the ideal solution to their problems in the attacking department. With 29 goals in 34 games this season, Osimhen is the most prolific striker in Europe, and his contract with Napoli expires in a year. That puts Napoli under pressure to sell the player, otherwise the Italians risk losing him for free next summer.
Due to Financial Fair Play regulations, Manchester United are operating on a budget constraint but are confident they can secure Osimhen for less than his market value. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's strategy is based on building a young squad with long-term prospects and transfer value.
Along with Osimhen, United are also considering the option of Liam Delap from Ipswich, who has a £30m release clause, but Amorim prefers to go for Osimhen because of his experience and ability to play at the highest European levels.
As well as being a regular goalscorer, Osimhen has UEFA Champions League experience, and was the architect of Napoli's first Serie A title in 33 years in the 2022-23 season. At United, Rasmus Hojlund has scored just one goal in 28 appearances, while Joshua Zirkzee is out for the rest of the season, leaving coach Amorim with few options.
Manchester United are planning to raise funds for the transfer market by selling some of their key players: Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are all set to leave in the summer, while negotiations to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves are ongoing. In this way, Ruben Amorim aims to rebuild the attacking department and restore competition between players at United.
