Brentford have rejected Newcastle's improved £40m bid for striker Yoane Wissa. The northern English club had proposed an initial fee of £35m, plus a further £5m in add-ons. After talks with Brentford resumed on Wednesday, sources reported that the latest offer was lower than Brentford's valuation of Wissa. Wissa held talks with Brentford owner Matthew Benham on Tuesday, a development that led to the talks. Newcastle's previous bid for the 28-year-old striker was up to £30m.
Earlier this week, Wissa removed all links to Brentford from his Instagram profile, making it clear that his future had taken a new turn. He wants to join Newcastle, but Brentford have so far refused to allow him to leave. He scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season.
Reports suggest that Wissa flew home early from a training camp in Portugal in July, after which he threatened not to play or train for the club again unless his move to St James' Park was approved. Since then, relations between him and the club have begun to improve, resulting in his return to first-team training, while he continues to express a desire to join Newcastle.
Wissa believed Brentford would approve his move to the north-west once they signed a replacement. He expected Brentford to agree to his move this week after signing Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth. Brentford also lost another striker, Bryan Mbeumo, to Manchester United this summer.
